For years I have always known that peripheral vision is more sensitive than focused vision in uncovering the world around us. I remember the special warfare training in the military and how we trained the teams to not focus directly on something to become more aware of their surroundings. They never went into the actual science of this though and later in school this was reinforced by anatomy. Many of my peers these days are familiar with the learning state where we focus and expand our awareness to become more open to the learning. I thought I would take a few minutes to explain why we are able to see things out of the corner of our eyes that we can not see when we focus directly on them.

Let us start with the eye itself. Obviously the eye consists of different types of cells and these cells will provide a specific function. The body itself consists of cells that receive information from the outside. These cells are comonly referred to as receptor cells. These receptor cells receive information and convert it into electrical and chemical signals to send along the way to the neuro-network. You will also see these cells referred to as transducers which is common in engineering terms. The receptor cells are located in the retina of the eye itself.

As you look at the diagram above of the eye you notice the Fovea area which is also referred to as our focus area or point. This area is used as our center of attention and consists of cone receptor cells. As we move outward from the Fovea our Retina starts to include another receptor cell called the rods. So basically there are two different receptor cells in our Retina the Cones and Rods. You might ask why this is important so let me explain in more detail.

Consider that we need a certain level to see anything. For an example we measure light in a level of degrees. It might take 5 levels for us to see anything and if the level is under that 5 it is just a void.

We have 130 million cells in our retina and of these 4 million are cones and 126 million are rods. Connecting the receptor cells is a bipolar cell that connects them with our retinal ganglia which connects to the 1 million optic nerve fibers. Doing the math you see that 130 million does not really relate to 1 million very well. There are also less bipolar cells than there are receptor and optic nerve fibers. To make this even more important is how these are spread out. The cones all have their own optic nerve fibers when needed. The ratio for cones to bipolar to optic nerve fibers is 3-2-3 which means that we get a clearer picture. Now lets take an example of the rods that share everything in the thousands to hundreds of thousands. Just as an example we can have 10,000 rods sharing 4 bipolar cells which share one optic nerve fiber.

What this explains is that the slightest level now seen through the peripheral vision will be increased because more recepter cells are seeing it and combining the information on one optic nerve fiber. This is why we can see movement and light better from the corners of our eyes but cannot see it when looking directly at it.

When we are putting outselves into the learning state we are telling our bodies to activate and use more of our senses to pay more attention to the world around us instead of focusing on just that one thing. My question for you is this then. Can we see auras better without focusing on them because our rods can pick up the lower frequency and intensify it through the process making it more visible? Is that shadow that we see moving at times because our rods can increase our visual acutity allowing us to see something that might not be there with regular focus?

Maybe this is just something cool to know as well and now that you understand the anatomy of our visual process maybe you can come up with your own interpretations as well.

I have a lot of people that contact me saying they want to learn Hypnosis. “I want to learn how to Hypnotize Someone Fast!” or “I want to put people into a Deep Trance to make them change!” Over the years I think I have heard just about everything. “Can you Teach me Hypnosis so I can tell if my girlfriend is lying?” or ” I want to make my husband stop doing something!”.

So let’s start with the title of this article. Trance is easy - that is right a complete idiot can put someone into a trance. Look at Paris Hilton and the media. There is no way that either would exist like they do if it was not for the fact that people like to be put into an altered states. Your first date was an altered state more than likely. Our lives are lived in altered states. We pretend that an altered state is something special and that only the smart can get into it. Well maybe only the smart can use it correctly would be more of an accurate term these days. The cute girl that smiles at the older man or that newscasts that tugs on your emotions annoying you with the story. The ad that suggests that sexy people smoke cigarettes and these days the ad that shows you that smoking is a rebel to attract even more smokers. Think about it for a second. How many of our young people are still smoking? I seen a picture with Miley Cyrus smoking a cigarette and how about the one with her smoking the bong. I can say that I was disappointed to see it but what is disappointment these days as well? Think about it for a second..why would I be disappointed that Miley Cyrus smokes? Not related to her, don’t hang out together so what is it then. It is my own expectations put on someone else isn’t it. Not fair to Miley really and not a smart thing for me as well unless I like being disappointed. Sorry I have went off subject here so let me get back on track.

We live in an altered state so to say we want to learn how to create an altered state seems easy then right!. All we really have to do is have someone focus on an emotion and walla we have an altered state. The question should be how can we create a resourceful state instead of an altered state. That would be different right. What we need to find out is what is a good resource state for people so they can find different ways to do things. Isn’t it annoying to not have a choice in life? It is kind of frustrating to think you only have one choice isn’t it? Of course it is so part of success is having more choices wouldn’t you agree?

So lets cover what you have not learned so far okay? Trance is an altered state that we live in already. Did you already learn that or are you coming up with other ways to say it internally that makes more sense to you now! Love, lust, pride, happiness, joy, excitement and how many other positive states can you come up with.

Did you find it easier to think of a negative state than a positive state? Did you know we have twice as many ways to describe a negative in our lives than a positive? I wonder why we felt it necessary to explore the negative side of life more than the positive. Could it be because the mental health professionals spend more time on the negatives of our lives so they have to define that more? Just thinking out loud here. I really don’t know why we would take more time to explain the negative side of life.

I seem to keep getting off track today. I was covering things that you did not learn yet right? So to sum it up we are not concerned with just any altered state now are we. We really want a resourceful state that allows us to find the answers to challenges we might be experiencing. Would you agree with that or is there a better way you might want to say it internally now so you can start to find some answers you are looking for now or maybe later. After all have you ever noticed that you are always right.

Any ways I did not discuss Change is Different did I? Maybe you are already getting an idea of why Trance is Easy and why Change is Different? You have changed many times over your life haven’t you? Of course you have when you sit right back now and think of it. Think of all the successful things that you have done and things that you have changed in order to do them. It is really quite amazing how fast and how much we change now isn’t it. You are still the same person that you always were and along the way you keep fine-tuning and learning more things now don’t you. Just by reading my ramble right now you might have already started to think about some things a little differently allowing you to take control and have more choices. After all didn’t we agree earlier that you really like having more choices and that it is frustrating to only have one choice in your life. Didn’t you also agree that you really wanted to practice and learn how to use a resource state better.

I have to go for now and thanks for talking with me here. After all you were having an internal dialog while reading this were you not! Do you pay more attention to your internal dialog so you can better understand your own self talk now or will you start later when you find it useful.

I was sitting and pondering the whole concept of peace on the planet. It could be that the whole concept of Peace for all is kind of a fantasy really. Let’s take an honest look at what really might stop peace from happening.

#1. People have different beliefs in which they have built their existence on. With me being an American I have been raised in a mainly Christian society. America as well seems to be more of an extension of Christianity in their politics. We make a decision that something is not right for people based on our moral standards and then we decide to go out and kill people or resolve the issue by force. When the same thing happens from another viewpoint we consider them to be fanatics but it is inline with Christian beliefs or we can pretend we are the Knights in Shinning Armor we will kill, and go to war to protect somebody that basically does not have our belief. So in order for us to maintain a world peace would everyone have to share our moral standards or beliefs in what is right. Some of the worse crimes against the world have happened because of religion so maybe the idea is to get rid of religion so we an all live together.

#2. What about the whole idea of right and wrong, good and evil. Over the centuries traditions and cultures have formed. A culture that allows a 50 year old man to marry a 12 year old girl and have several wives. Maybe a culture that believes that people can be slaves or maybe you like the term servant better. What about dictators, communism, socialism and democracy, can they all live together really. So now we create the United Nations that appear to work together so that no-one nation makes the decision for all. Like that really worked right. If the United Nations was annoyed at the United States are you telling me that if push came to shove we would not just thumb our noses at it and flex our muscles. We as people see things as black and white most of the time and unfortunately we are blind to many of the things that other people see. From my days in the military and traveling the world our news was different than the news I read about the United States in other countries. What about if this decision effected your children or parents.

The whole challenge with world peace is that we need to include the world. As anyone will also notice that the whole world is not a nice place and there are people out there that have different beliefs, values and ideas of what is right and wrong. For this reason I think that right now I will smile when someone tells me that they want to have world peace and I am going to focus on peace at home instead. In life when we look at the big picture it can become unmanageable and a puzzle. When I take a look at myself first and then work outward I see that there is hope, because my first true goal is inner peace and then have it spread outward.

When I can accept that my thoughts are not intended to judge another, but just explain who I am. Then maybe I can become more accepting  of others allowing myself to grow. Maybe the answer is not world peace then, but to heal the world with inner peace instead.

In the past the biggest challenge with online training programs has been how to assure that the students have the knowledge. With increased training students can change (techniques|styles|programs} to meet the needs of today’s clients. Before, Hypnosis Certification programs simply taught students the basic knowledge that they needed to work with one style of client.

That is why many hypnotherapists embrace Elman or Erickson only. They are not taught the benefits of both in their training. Students or professionals that only know one way of working with clients limit their success.

Our pupils of today are going to be the instructors of tomorrow. Our job as instructors is to provide them with all the tools to be great. Today’s our average client is more aware of the mind and hypnosis. They deserve more than a script reading hypnotist or hypnotherapist. Scripts are a basic tool. Hypnotherapists today need to do much more than read a script for a client. A good hypnotist can create the session with the clients help on the spot.

I remember when I first started my hypnosis career on stage. My instructor told me that all I needed to do was to memorize the scripts he wrote and I would be a success. The training focused on the stage and performance. I learned how to sell myself and the show. A week after my training I did a show for 400 people. The show was a success. I was still missing an understanding of what hypnosis really was. I felt like a wind-up toy that would perform the same routine over and over because it works. When people started to ask me about hypnosis I had the same canned speech. Information that professionals today are telling their clients and audience. Is it because it works or is it because they have not taken the time to understand hypnosis better?

This led me to more and more classes over the years. Hypnosis professionals still like to use what works for them. The main challenge is that people are different. What works on one does not always work on another. There was a client that wanted to quit smoking. She was in her 90′s. I asked her what she needed to stop smoking. She told me she needed to feel sick every time she went to smoke. Not only sick but disgusted by the thought of smoking as well. She has smoked for 70 years. The doctor said that if she did not stop she would die. You might think that this would give her enough incentive, but it didn’t. Normally, I would not do a negative session (a session that focuses on an abreaction to something) because people are rebels. We like to overcome a negative to say we can. That is why using a benefit approach to stop smoking is better for most. She knew what she needed, so I gave it to her. The client said it was easy to stop smoking. She then told her doctor about the success. This same doctor that told her she was wasting her time, now started to refer his clients to me. This is the difference between doing what works for me, and doing what the client wants. Our clients are the key to our success. Making a diagnosis is for licensed healthcare professionals. Our job is to gather and provide tools so the clients get what they want.

When looking for your online hypnosis training program. Look for a program that provides you more than a textbook or lesson plans. There are many programs out there that provide basic lessons. You can get the same from buying a book and reading it yourself. You want a program that offers time with the instructors. Instructors and a program recommended by organizations other than their own. Is the training recognized by several major organizations or is it just a piece of paper? A state certified school does not mean you receive a state license in California. It will guarantee that you are spending a lot of money for the education. I have mentored a lot of professionals that graduated from state certified schools. There is a school that teaches handwriting analysis and dream therapy as a major subject for hypnotherapists. Hypnotherapists should know about hypnosis not handwriting analysis. Using handwriting to determine the issue of a client is diagnosing an issue.

Key points to look at in a training program:
Do you get personal time with your qualified instructor?
Is the instructor recognized by more than one organization as an instructor? (Note: Several organizations have been created by the same school or person.)
Is there forum to discuss training?
What resources do they provide? Audio and video programs. (Are the resources extra?)
What is their online class structure like? Is it just a teleconference or active participation? Do you get to teach to develop your skills?
Is the certification from a leading Hypnosis Organization or one they created?
Is there reviews and assessments which you keep to reinforce the learning later?
Does the material fit in with your own beliefs and goals?
Is the training designed to take you from the basic knowledge to where you want to go?
Will they teach you how to market your practice?

When you think about it you will see that a piece of paper is not as important as the knowledge you received. It is nice to get a nice piece of paper as well!

Many of you are aware that I am always looking for good programs and ideas to improve not only my life but my friends lives as well. I just finished a 3 day bootcamp with Maurice DiMino the Sicilian Mentor and it was great. In my 30 years of presenting and training just about anything and seeing all kinds of formats for doing it I enjoyed the simplicity and the flexibility of the Sicilian Mentor’s outline. He was personable, and tolerant of his guests when at times they just did not get it but he waited and assisted them to get over the housekeeping.

So the boot-camp is Presentations that Sell and it should say Presentations that Sell Effectively or maybe Presentations that Sell the way You Want. He promoted all of his vendors and guests very nicely and even when I was not interested in hearing it he was able to keep them short so they do not distract from the learning. He had some great guest presenters as well that were able to provide good information and at the same time it was just enough though to trigger that emotion of desire for more. I found that the 3 guests all had different approaches and they were very good at making sure you did not get enough information to satisfy you and used different distractions.

I would recommend Maurice’s workshops and everyone from a seasoned professional to a person that is just starting out will get a good value from the investment. Here is a link to his site: Sicilian Mentor

Some of the other presenters that I really enjoyed were Rick Frishman who is entertaining and informative. I believe that Rick was the most informative of the special guests and provided real information that everyone could use and too much at times so they needed to get more later.

There also was Craig Duswalt with his Rockstar System for Success. Craig is very entertaining as well as informative and he had a great way of providing you information and distracting you with stories so you learned and again desired more. I found myself hearing a great tip then it was followed by an interesting story about Guns and Roses or Aerosmith which distracted me from writing it down. I ended up writing three things when I should of written 3 pages of information with Craig. They both are high energy and lots of information so when you go to their workshops you will need to stay focused .

I learned something about myself at the event as well this weekend. One presenter Susan Levy who runs a speakers organization was an instant barrier for me. Her presentation might of included good information but it was lost on me. For a professional speaker I found her to be uninformative and the most selling and uninteresting. I was puzzled on why and thought about it because she might be a nice lady and have a lot of good information but in my world (which we all live in our own worlds) she was all talk and no benefit. I found myself contradicting her information on social network marketing in my mind and could easily prove the information she was providing was not accurate for business. Then I thought the reason that I was having a hard time is because I believed I know a lot about social network marketing so my mind is shutting down what I might be able to learn from her, or not. Out of all the dynamic people at the event though she did not match the rest of the group. I am not including her link because I can not recommend her from my own experience. Let me also say that there were many that thought she was great so it could just be a matter of taste. Sorry I was not able to myself.

Maurice had some vendors at the event as well like I said earlier and they included Michelle from Event Complete that was energetic and says she can fill your events so you focus on what you do best in presenting the information. I will be researching event complete a bit more and provide a review on that company later.

There was also Mary Barnett from Brilliant Mobile, selling text alert product to grow your business by collecting information for text messaging customers. I will research that more as well but my personal preference is no-one sends me a text unless they are a friend of mine, but remember business is not about our own preferences these days. Talked to a couple people and they attempted to get information but Mary was always busy or going somewhere so do not know much about it yet.

There was a book shepard there as well but I do not know much information about her yet. I did grab her information so I could research the program though.

In the end I will say that the Boot-Camp assisted me in putting more structure to my presentations or should I say selling structure to my presentations. Focus on my branding again which I was getting away from and reinforces my belief that people need to speak for free to promote business and make sales. If you are not speaking in front of a group every week then you are not doing your part in developing your skills in my opinion. If you have a fear of speaking then to put it honest get over it and start doing it. Learn the tools, find resources like Maurice, Craig or Rick to hone your skills and if you have a mental block or challenge with speaking contact me directly or find someone in your area to help you with it.

Public Speaking is fun and exciting so like my friend Pink Lady would say: Get up, Get Out and Get a Life. OK so it might not totally fit the discussion but this is my blog so it works. Thanks and have a fantastic week my friends.
